PHOTO ASSISTANT – SEATTLE
It’s been said that ‘being a good photographer & being a good assistant are two completely & utterly different things.‘
I’m inclined to agree. Although, I think being a good photographer certainly doesn’t hurt when it comes to making independent decisions & aiding the creative process on the whole. The point is made to differentiate between roles, clarify a common misnomer, & reiterate that you are there to aid the photographer (& learn)… not to network or pursue your own photographic aspirations.
Philosophical speeches aside, here are the duties an assistant will be expected to perform & the qualities I’m looking for in an individual:
PRIMARY NOMINAL DUTIES
Gear management, testing, & cleaning.
Image offloading & file management.
General production, studio, location, & office errands. Too many to name.
Distract clients. (I didn’t say that).
|SKILLS + TRAITS||
Attention to detail.
Has epic photographic aspirations of their own.
Leaves their epic photographic aspirations at the door.
Able & willing to work long hours for little or no pay.
Well-networked, connections/hookups to venues, retailers/shops, etc.
Set building skills. Crafty. Not a medical liability.
Knows locations/area very well.
Be able to predict the need & execute before asked.
Asks good questions.
You must have a flexible schedule.
You must have reliable transportation.
You must be punctual & professional at all times.
|WHAT YOU GET||
Negotiable pay for commercial work days, based on experience.
Mentoring & instruction. Technical & professional.
Free studio access.
Free equipment access. Maybe.
Free access to workshops. Although technically you’re working too.
Free Taekwondo lessons. If you want.
Work hours per week is flexible, generally 15-25hrs. Sometimes less, sometimes more.
Prior experience as an assistant or photographer is not nearly as important as an eagerness to learn & work hard.
